How GPS Tracking Works in Transportation
GPS tracking for transportation is part of a larger system called Telematics, which combines telecommunications and informatics.
Hardware (The Tracker): A small GPS tracking device (often called a telematics unit) is installed in the vehicle, on cargo, or on a high-value asset.
Location Determination: The device contains a GNSS receiver (Global Navigation Satellite System, with GPS being the most common) which listens for signals from multiple orbiting satellites. By calculating the time it takes for these signals to arrive, the device accurately pinpoints its own location (latitude, longitude, speed, direction).
Data Transmission: This location data, along with other telematics data, is then transmitted wirelessly in near real-time (usually via a cellular network like 4G/5G) to a central server.
Software (The Platform): Specialized Fleet Management Software (FMS) receives, processes, and stores this vast amount of data. This software then translates the raw coordinates into a visual representation on a map interface for fleet managers and dispatchers.
